    - Brace for Impact (2020) for organ & electronics

Brace for Impact is an arm wrestling match between the organ and a pre-recorded track with electric guitars. Both instruments share cliché-like characteristics such as loudness, and tendency for performers to use the instrument to “show off”. Here they go for the ultimate match.
Extra special thanks to Stephen O’Malley who generously took time to record the guitar parts with me in Paris. Additional guitar riff samples from Meshuggah.

    - Neinternet (2019) for organ and electronics
Commissioned by Cory Arcangel & Hampus Lindwall for Art Night London 2019, curated by Helen Nisbet. Neinternet is a narrative piece that deals with the unbearable frustration of not having a functioning internet connection. The title being a combination of “nein” and “internet” is referring to the notoriously infamous German internet. The narrator's thoughts are drifting farther away, wandering in the boredom of waiting, while the organ is mimicking the sound of a 1990s dial-up modem.

    Film and organ
The film “Minor Daemon” (2021) by Jon Rafman (Canada) and organ improvisation by Hampus Lindwall (Belgium/France), exploring the complete soundscape of the new Rieger organ.

(In collaboration with Gothenburg Art Sounds and Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.)

    Film Synopsis:
Set in a surreal dystopia that feels like the deranged fever-dream of Hieronymus Bosch if he had grown up on 4chan, the film traces the intersecting fortunes of two young men, Billy and Minor Daemon, who share an extraordinary gift for virtual reality gaming. Billy, a spoiled frat boy, is the top dog at an elite prep school. Minor Daemon, abandoned at birth, is a guileless asthmatic raised in a child labour compound. After a nightmarish sequence of events, the two are incarcerated at the same supermax penitentiary. They join forces and catapult their VR prison team to the league championships, where a victory will secure their freedom. After a devastating defeat in the grand finals, the two men then plan an intricate escape. Billy ends up betraying Minor Daemon during a bungled prison break, and flees to a remote pleasure planet. There Billy climbs the ladder of an intergalactic criminal underworld, as Minor Daemon suffers through the horrors of prison life. When he’s finally released years later, Minor Daemon, obsessed with vengeance, tracks Billy down to the violent alien planet. In a place where dreams are paid for in blood, Billy and Daemon face-off in an ultimate showdown that will seal their fate.

A Saami Requiem is an extraordinary meeting-place of musical cultures – Western classical, Saami yoik, Nordic folk-dance, electric rock, blues, improv and more. It takes the form of a journey to Saajva, the Kingdom of Death in Saami religious practice. With it the Swedish organist Gunnar Idenstam and Saami artist Ola Stinnerbom provide a parallel to the Christian Requiem, with Ola Stinnerbom as noite, the shaman who acts as guide to the Kingdom of Death – and back to this life, celebrated in the uplifting closing hymn. Some of the percussion sounds are sampled from traditional Saami drums made by Ola Stinnerbom after ancient models; the electric guitars provide a link to rock groups like Deep Purple and King Crimson; and Gunnar Idenstam’s unmistakable style marries the French organ tradition with the alluring world of Swedish folk music.

The music of the Swedish, but Paris-based, composer, Madeleine Isaksson, is at the core of this concert, and not least the premiere of her new chamber work Infiltrations where the concert hall organ mixes with electric guitar and acoustic instruments. Isaksson's music is characterized by her clear, poetic touch, which can often be heard in her chiseled sounds and long, musical lines. Regarding the almost 20-year-old work Fibres, Isaksson talks about the thread as a musical metaphor. A long, drawn-out musical line becomes surrounded and ornamented by the various instruments. In the new work, Isaksson's choice of organ and electric guitar in the instrumentation is tonally motivated, to bind the ensemble together.
